US Virgin Islands 1987

This Page            Previous Page

The former Danish West Indies were ceded to the United States in 1917, and at the same time renamed US Virgin Islands.  In 1987 -- seventy years later -- the US Virgin Islands issued their first "own" Christmas seals showing the three tiny islands, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, in the Caribbean.  The sheet contains three strips of each five seals, and in the lower strip are inserted the last DWI 1916 seal, as well as the arms for the islands.

Below the strip is a scan of the full sheet, together with more information about the issue.

The sheet is designed by the Danish stamp designer Holger Philipsen, and is printed by Egmont H. Petersen A/S, appointed to the Royal Danish Courst, Copenhagen.
