(1853-1890) Self Portraits and Flowers

In spite of Van Gogh's manic depressive mind so much reflected in his self portraits, and his outspoken wish to paint ordinary workers "down to earth" as he saw them, he also had his bright moments which largely show in his poetic flower paintings. 

• The Gambia 1991. Four self portraits of Van Gogh, painted 1886-1887, when he was around 33-34 years old, and in varying moods.  All portraits belong to the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (The Netherlands), and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

• Maldives 1991.  Vase with Flowers.
• Republic of Haiti 1971. Vase with Iris. 
• Maldives 1991.  Sun Flowers.  These flowers were a bouquet of flowers intended to decorate his room in the yellow house he had rented in Arles.  

• A very nice sheet of Dutch City Post stamps, used to pay for private, local transportation of letters or parcels within a city. The stamps have different face values, depending on the fare to be paid. The sheet is pretty small, only 10 * 7,5 cm, so it is shown here largely oversized for a better view. The stamps are not valid for paying ordinary postage.

• Nicaragua 1991.  Vase with Zinnia and Geranium.  Belongs to the National Gallery of Canada. 
• Monaco 1978.  Vase with Iris.  

Most of Van Gogh's self portraits and flower paintings have been issued by a huge number of countries, mostly showing always "the same painting".  For this page I have made a point of showing as many different ones as I could find world wide of his most expressive self portraits and most delicate flower paintings.
