Self Portraits and Flowers

Nicaragua 1991. Vincent van Gogh. Self-Portrait.

In spite of Van Gogh's manic depressive mind so much reflected in his self portraits, and his outspoken wish to paint ordinary workers "down to earth" as he saw them, he also had his bright moments which largely show in his poetic flower paintings.

St. Vincent 1990. Vincent van Gogh. Self-Portrait.

  • St. Vincent 1990.  Self Portrait.
The Caribbean islands of St. Vincent have issued a large number of Van Gogh's self portraits on stamps.  Strangely enough the islands bear his name, Vincent, so maybe it is "natural" to issue a large set of stamps.  The self-portrait shows Van Gogh shortly before his death in 1890 when he had cut his ear off, and therefore wears a bandage.

  • France 1956. Self-Portrait.
